myofunctional therapy

What is Myofunctional therapy?

Orofacial Myofunction Therapy (OMT) or Myofunctional Therapy (MFT) focuses on the re-education of the muscles of the mouth and face. This therapy involves a customized set of exercises aimed at increasing awareness and minimizing muscle compensations. The primary objective is to restore normal function by addressing improper muscle movements, teaching proper chewing, swallowing, tongue resting posture and breathing techniques.

Myofunctional therapy offers a comprehensive approach to addressing various oral and facial concerns, including mouth breathing, orthodontic relapse, snoring and sleep apnea, as well as other forms of sleep disordered breathing. It can also be beneficial for those experiencing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, tongue-tie and habits such as thumb or finger sucking and nail biting. By correcting these issues, myofunctional therapy supports healthier oral habits in children and adults alike.
